What is IDDSI?
Our food comes in 1 regular texture and 3 special textures (IDDSI standards) to suit people of different chewing/swallowing ability.
IDDSI stands for International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative.
There are roughly 8% or 590 million people
suffering from dysphagia worldwide.
But the names and levels used in treating dysphagia are different between institutions and countries.
This causes confusion and can affect treatments.
As such, in 2013, a group of experts decided to develop a common language to name and describe texture modified foods and thickened liquids.
This led to the IDDSI Framework which was launched in November 2015.
